“Andrew Frazer has created a sculptural sanctuary for the new Education Support Program Building for Wanneroo Secondary College as part of the WA Government Percent for Art Scheme.
The Education Support Program Building is a significant new building for the school and will accommodate 80 students.
Andrew’s artwork draws inspiration from the native bushland of Wanneroo, reflected in both its sculptural form and natural colours. The design is based on the flowering nut of the Grevillea obtusifolia, which opens upward toward the sky as it blooms. The sculpture also functions as a seating space, offering students a partially enclosed area where they can sit comfortably while remaining visible and connected to their surroundings.
The blossoming flowers of the grevillea attract many native birds including the New Holland Honeyeater. The flowering season starts in winter (Djeran) and continues until spring (Kambarang).
The sculpture is an organic form standing in the heart of the grounds for the new building, that creates a space for shelter, that is safe but not hidden.”
